30 August 2004 - US Open Update Jan-Michael starts his 8th US Open campaign this week in New York. Drawn against fellow American Rajeev Ram in the first round, Jan-Michael will be hoping for a good run at his home grand slam.
17 March 2004 - Roddick beats Gambill again Jan-Michael came up against A-Rod in round 2 in Indian Wells and for the second time this year, he came off second best, when Andy won 7-6, 6-2 to progress onward in the first TMS event of 2003. Although Jan-Michael fought very hard in the first set, he did not have enough answers to the relentless pressure from Roddick who looks a real threat to win another TMS. For Jan-Michael, his next stop will be the Nasdaq 100 Open which begins next week. 13 March 2004 - Jan-Michael wins opener in Indian Wells Jan-Michael continued to make progress after quarter final appearances in San Jose, Memphis and Scottsdale by winning his first round match in Indian Wells when he beat Van Lottum from Belgium 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Next up will be Andy Roddick. 7 March 2004 - Scottsdale Update Scottsdale has always been one of Jan-Michael's favourite tournaments because this was where he won his first tournament back in 1999. This year, Jan-Michael reached the quarter finals beating Brendan Evans and Lars Burgsmuller before he ran into the number one seed, Andy Roddick. Although JM won the first set on a breaker, Roddick's success in the States (which stretches back to last summer) continued when Andy came back to beat JM in three sets. 28 February 2004 - Memphis Update It was Americans all the way for Jan-Michael as he reached a second consecutive quarter final in Memphis. Straight sets victories against Taylor Dent and then Brian Baker put Jan-Michael up against Nicolas Kiefer who is another player making a comeback this year. Kiefer's luck was in that day and Jan-Mike lost 3-6, 4-6. 15 February 2004 - San Jose Update Jan-Mike had a good week in San Jose - much like usual - when he beat Wayne Ferreira and KJ Hippensteel on the way to the quarter finals where he came up against Andre Agassi. Although Andre won the match in two sets, Jan-Michael made him work for it by taking the first set to a tie break before the second was over 5-7. 19 January 2004 - Jan-Michael beats Carraz Jan-Michael has returned to Melbourne and started his 2004 Aussie Open campaign with a victory - although this was as a result of his opponent being forced to retire. Jan Michael was 2 sets up in his match against Gregory Carraz of France 6-2, 6-3 when Carraz threw in the towel. Next up is Sebastien Grosjean. 31 August 2003 - Jan-Michael's US Open campaign ends Jan-Michael finished his US Open campaign for 2003 when he was beaten in the second round by Jiri Novak. Although he fought extremely hard, Jan-Mike could not stop Novak as he progressed to the third round with a straight sets victory. Jan-Mike is now taking a rest to mentally prepare for the last few tournaments on the ATP Tour for 2003. 27 August 2003 - US Open First Round news Jan-Michael is in New York this week to play his "home" Grand Slam, the last major of 2003. During a mixed summer on the ATP Tour, Jan-Mike has had some early exits in his US Open tune up tournaments. However now in New York, he played Spaniard David Sanchez in the opening round and looked pretty slick as he took the match in straight sets. After taking the first set on a tie break, Jan-Mike gained in confidence and motivation as the match went on and raced to victory 7-6, 6-2, 6-2. His next opponent is Jiri Novak.
15 January 2003 - Jan-Michael loses in singles Another five set match, but unfortunately this time, Jan-Michael came off second best. After taking an early lead by winning the first set (and later, the third set), Jan-Michael was not able to wrestle control of the match back his way once his opponent, Felix Mantilla got the initiative as the match reached its climax in the fourth and fifth sets. Once more, Jan-Mike sees defeat in Melbourne after a five set marathon - 5-7, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. It is a shame that the confidence Jan-Michael gained in Doha and from the Llodra match is not to be continued in Melbourne - at least in the singles.... Jan-Mike still has the doubles with Graydon Oliver to consider .... 13 January 2003 - Jan-Michael finally wins a singles match in Melbourne After failing to win a singles match in Melbourne over the last few years, I should think that Jan-Michael probably had a feeling of deja vu earlier today when he was pegged back from two sets up to two sets all. However, he dug deep and probably used his confidence gained in Doha to get him through the last set and eventually he won 6-2, 7-5, 6-7, 4-6, 6-2. More news on the draw soon. 12 January 2003 - Jan-Michael / Melbourne Draw News The Australian Open draw has put Jan-Michael up against Michel Llodra from France. He is set to play third match on Court 7 on Monday. After being Runner-Up in Doha, Jan-Michael will be hoping that his run of form continues in Melbourne. 4 January 2003 - Jan-Michael is Runner-Up in Doha Earlier today, Jan-Michael played in the final in Doha. Unfortunately he came up against Austrian Stefan Koubek who has been on fire the last few days. On Friday he beat the defending champion Younes El Aynaoui and today he showed that this victory was no fluke. Although Jan-Michael fought well, he had no answer to the Austrian leftie's serve, only managing to win about a handful of points on his opponent's serve and this proved the difference between the players, with Stefan Koubek winning 6-4, 6-4. Jan-Michael's next tournament is due to be Auckland, New Zealand - so he now has at least one long flight and a battle to be over jet lag before he plays again in a few days! 3 January 2003 - Jan-Michael reaches the final in Qatar Jan Michael has most definitely hit the ground running in this 2003 season on the ATP Tour. In 2001, he reached 7 quarter finals in his first 8 tournaments, and now he has reached the final in Qatar, beating Russian Mikhail Youzhny (yes - the one that won the Davis Cup for Russia) in straight sets. Jan-Michael lost his opening service game but then settled his nerves and fought his way back into the match and never really looked back. He spent most of the match playing from the baseline, rarely venturing to the net, choosing to play a game of accuracy rather than power and beat Youzhny 6-4, 6-2, setting up a final against Stefan Koubek (who beat last year's champion Younes El Aynaoui). 2 January 2003 - Jan-Michael derails the Federer Express Jan-Michael stepped up his match play with a brilliant battle against No.1 seed and Swiss supremo, Roger Federer in the quarter finals in Doha. Jan-Michael was in blistering form and played with great energy to beat the top tenner in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5 and reach the semi finals in his very first tournament of the year. Earlier round results: 10 November 2002 - A Round up of 2002 for Jan-Michael Jan-Mike finishes the year at 40th place in the Champions Race and 42nd in the Entry System which was not quite up to his expectations at the start of the year. However, Jan-Michael has been troubled with injuries at various times and with so much strength in depth in the Men's game at the moment, Jan-Mike's top 50 finish is positive. Overall in 2002, Jan-Michael won 28 singles matches (from 54) and 30 doubles matches (from 48). In singles, he reached the final in Los Angeles, and 3 semi finals at Memphis, San Jose and Delray Beach and reached the 4th Round at the US Open.. In doubles, Jan-Michael had better success, he won two tournaments, Hamburg TMS (with Mahesh Bhupathi) and Hong Kong (with Graydon Oliver). For the rest of the year, Jan-Michael played with Graydon where they reached two more finals, Houston and Tokyo, semi finals at Long Island and Lyon and quarter finals at Los Angeles and Washington DC. His prize money fund for the year stands at $519k. In the off season, Jan-Michael will no doubt be resting his aching muscles, and dividing his time between his home in Colbert, Washington State and Hawaii. 3 September 2002 - Jan-Michael loses to Agassi again After three great matches, Jan-Michael came unstuck at the fourth round stage when he took on one of the best of the best - Andre Agassi - for a place in the quarter finals. Although he fought hard throughout the match, there was something missing from his performance against Agassi. More than likely it was just that Agassi never let Jan-Michael get into his stride and as a result, Jan-Michael was soon up against it. Having lost the first set 2-6, Jan-Michael just could not produce more of his best tennis like against Moya. Eventually, he lost 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 and now will take some time to rest before embarking on the final few weeks of the season. 1 September 2002 - Jan-Mike sets up rematch vs Agassi After Jan-Michael played one of his best matches of the year to beat Spaniard Carlos Moya, JM carried out another assassination job over Argentina's Gaston Gaudio to progress to the fourth round in New York. A straight sets victory over Moya left the Spaniard reeling from shock. In beating Gaston, Jan-Michael won by losing only 2 games. This quick victory will allow him to prepare for his next match against Agassi. 30 August 2002 - Jan-Michael beats US Open Contender Carlos Moya Jan-Michael's second round match in New York was one of the most eagerly awaited matches and it certainly lived up to expectations. After Moya had won the recent TMS event in Cincinnati, he was one of the leading contenders to take the US Open title at the beginning of the tournament. The other factor involved was that Jan-Michael had a losing record against Carlos which he was hoping to put right. The first two sets were fiercely fought and JM won both 6-3, 6-3. With a two set advantage, JM then raced through the third set, losing just one game to record a very well deserved victory 6-3, 6-3, 6-1. Jan-Michael faces Gaston Gaudio in the third round. 27 August 2002 - US Open News Jan-Michael was drawn against Austrian Julian Knowle for the first round at Flushing Meadows. Jan-Michael was hoping to do well at the final grand slam event of the year and he started off extremely well by finishing off the Austrian after only one set! JM had raced through the first set for the loss of only one game and when 2-1 up in the second set, Knowle was forced to default with injury - just one of several players to default matches at the first round stage. Jan-Michael now faces a tricky second round match against Carlos Moya. July/August 2002 - US Hardcourt season A resurgent Jan-Michael seems to be hitting his peak at the right time in time for the last major of the year - the US Open which starts next week. After a final appearance in Los Angeles where he registered a very well deserved victory over Andy Roddick, Jan-Michael had a couple of early defeats in Cincinnati and Washington before he hit a run of form again in Long Island in his final tournament preparation for the US Open. He beat Frenchman Julian Boutter and Stefan Koubek to reach the third round before coming unstuck against one of France's up and coming youngsters, Matthieu. June 2002 - Queens and Wimbledon - Grass Court Season Once the ATP Tour returned to Jan-Michael's more preferred surface of grass, he seemed more settled with his game at Queens Club. Here he managed to get two straight sets victories over American rivals Michael Chang and Mike Bryan before he came up against Sjeng Schalken. Although the match was very tight to begin with, Jan-Michael failed to win the first set tie break. He then raced through the second set for the loss of just one game 6-1 before the Dutchman fought back and eventually prevailed. Jan-Michael then moved up to Liverpool where there was a new pre-Wimbledon tournament set up in one of Merseyside's public parks. Results were very difficult to get from this event as it was publicised nationally, but I heard that Jan-Michael was probably the most popular draw card (along with Marat Safin) and did very well in this event. Once back in London, things did not exactly go to plan at Wimbledon. Although Jan-Michael won through his opening round match in straight sets, it was not exactly easy and he had to produce some good grass court tennis to beat Chilean Nicolas Massu to progress to a second round match against Taylor Dent. This was a tight serving contest from both players but in the end, Jan-Michael just did not have the answers to Dent's missile serves which proved to be leathal. He lost in striaght sets before turning his mind to the doubles event with Oliver Graydon. Although the boys won their early matches, once they came up against the might of the Bryan Twins things started to get more serious; and the more experienced American partnership won a five set shoot out. May 2002 - Clay Court season roundup As in 2001, Jan-Michael struggled with his game when the ATP Tour moved to the clay court season. Jan-Michael played 5 clay court events (including Monte Carlo, Houston, Hamburg, St Poelten and the French Open) but in that time, he only managed to gain one victory, which came in St Poelten when he beat Jan Vacek in three sets in his final lead up tournament to the French Open. Elsewhere, Jan-Michael was unlucky in the draws for his other events where he drew either seeded players or clay court specialists where it was difficult to get his game to work. March 2002 - Indian Wells and Miami TMS Events Lleyton Hewitt is really starting to bug me. The Aussie world No.1 was in Jan-Michael's quarter of the draw in both the first two TMS events of 2002. Jan-Michael's good form and confidence of 2001 seemed to have returned in the lead up to Indian Wells and Miami but once there he could not make the sort of progress he would have liked. In Indian Wells, Jan-Michael won through to the third round with good victories over fellow American Davis Cup rival, James Blake (where he came from a set down to win) and Australian Open semi finalist Jiri Novak, before he met that Aussie midget, Hewitt. Their match was played at furious pace from the baseline and it was the Australian who prevailed in straight sets (and in fact he continued like this for the rest of the tournament which he won). Moving on to the next event in Key Biscayne, Miami, Jan-Michael had a bye in the first round before he came up against Andre Sa (again) in round 2. Defending final points from 2001 it was important that he got off to good start and this he did with a straight sets win. However, the sight of Lleyton Hewitt lurked again in the third round where this time Jan-Michael did better. He won the first set and looked to be about to repeat his victory over the Australian (like in 2001) but although it was close and he fought hard, Lleyton prevailed in the end. March 2002 - Delray Beach Week Returning to the Florida resort of Delray Beach as the defending champion, things were again going to plan. Seeded 2 behind fellow American rival and frequent doubles partner, Andy Roddick, Jan-Michael again got through to the quarter finals. After another marathon match against Wayne Arthurs where JM had to save a match point before triumphing, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6, he was again taken to three sets by American rival and friend Mardy Fish but things got a little more serious as the touranment went on! At the quarter final stage, Jan-Michael had to play Brazil's Andre Sa. Again he had to come from a set down to progress but eventually he did just that to reach the semi finals for the second straight year, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4. The weather in the finals weekend was not exactly as expected for Florida in March and Jan-Michael struggled in his semi final against David Sanguinetti. As a result he lost in straight sets and headed to Carlifornia for the first TMS event of 2002. Also resident doubles champion with Andy Roddick, both these two American favourites have decided to forgo the opportunity to defend their title and concentrate on the singles. February 2002 - San Jose and Memphis Jan-Michael followed up on his performance in Memphis by continuing to show his form on the American hardcourts. He reached the semi finals for the second consecutive week. After fairly simple straight forward straight sets victories over Jan Vacek and Paul Goldstein, Jan-Mike was taken all the way against Aussie lefthander Wayne Arthurs 7-5, 6-7, 7-6 before another Aussie, the Hurricane Hewitt beat him in the semis. Jan-Michael certainly lived up to his seeding position of 3 by reaching the semi finals in Memphis this past week. Victories over Davydenko, Goldstein and Schuettler helped him to reach his first semi final of the year. Unfortunately, he lost to fellow American, James Blake in the semis 6-4, 7-6 and now moves on to San Jose. January 2002 - Australian Open Yet again, Jan-Michael failed to get beyond the first round in Melbourne when he came up against Wayne Ferreira. However this time he did not put his fans through a five set tense struggle and lost in straight sets. January 2002 - Auckland Week Unfortunately, Jan-Michael's good run of form did not continue in New Zealand. He lost to Spain's Francisco Clavet in the first round in Auckland. January 2002 - Hopman Cup Week Victories against France and Belgium (plus a defeat by Italy) put the USA team of Jan-Michael Gambill and Monica Seles into the final of the Hopman Cup last week. In the final, they played Spain and although Monica Seles won her singles match, Jan-Michael lost to Tommy Robredo in three sets, which left the mixed doubles as the decider. Unfortunately, Arantaza Sanchez-Vicario and Tommy Robredo proved too good and beat Monica and JM in straight sets. For access to the News Archives - click here |
