14 November 1999 - Final and Bust

Unfortunately, Jan-Michael 's magnificent run in Stockholm came to an end when he lost the doubles final to Norval & Ullyett.  They lost in straight sets and that is that as far as this season is concerned.

13 November - Semi finals all day

After losing the first set 6-0, Jan-Mike really pulled himself together and produced some of his really best tennis (from both sides) as he fought back against Magnus Gustaffson to take the second set.  The final set was tremendously exciting with first JM breaking and then MG breaking back.  Then MG broke again and JM had to break to stay in the match at 4-5 down, which he did to LOVE.  The match went to a final set tie break and unfortunately JM eventually came off second best - though not a bad end of the year.  His first career title in Scottsdale and finishing the year with a flourish by making his first European indoor semi final in Stockholm.

And if that wasn't all - he had to play in the doubles semi final later in the day.  Together with partner Scott Humphries they managed to beat their Swedish opposition (Nikolas Kulti and Mikhael Tillstrom in three sets - including a final set tie break) and they have to play the Zimbabwe / South African opposition of Piet Norval and Kevin Ullyett in the final.

12 November - What a week!

After a pretty miserable few weeks for Jan-Michael - he is finishing the 1999 season in style after beating Henman and Philippoussis on his way to the Semi Finals in Stockholm.  He is now the only non-Swedish player left in the draw so will no doubt have to undergo loads of pressure and intimidation from the Swedish fans tomorrow.   He has produced the same sort of tennis which took him to his first title in Scottsdale earlier this year and with results like this should finish the year near the Top 50.

On top of this, Jan-Michael will also be playing in the Semi finals of the doubles event with partner Scott Humphries. They beat Arthurs and Kratzman in the first round and then Swedish wild card pair - Enqvisit and Larsson in the 2nd round/quarter final. However, they will most definitely be the underdogs in the semis because they have to face another Scandinavian pairing - Nicolas Kulti and Mikhael Tillstrom.

7 November - JM in Stockholm

Sorry for the lack of news on JM over the past fortnight.  However, things return to normal this week because JM is playing in Stockholm.  He has drawn Frenchman Arnaud di Pasquale in the first round and might have to face Tim Henman in Round 2.

29 October - Stuttgart Super 9 Update

Jan-Michael has had a mixed month of October.  Because of his ranking, he failed to get direct entry to the Super 9 in Stuttgart and played the qualifying competition.  However, he lost to Pozzi in his last match before qualification.  On the doubles side, he has had more success.  Partnered by Sjeng Schalken, they had a walkover in the first round against Agassi and Kiefer after Kiefer injured his ankle, beat Delaitre and Santoro in Round 2 but lost to Jonas Bjorkman and Byron Black in the next round.

23 October - News from Lyon

JMG won his first match against Jan Kroslak but failed to beat Sebastien Grosjean in Round 2.  Better luck next time Jan-Mike.

16 October - Singapore Update

JMG did manage to beat his US team mates Gimelstob in Round 1 and Michael Chang in Round 2.  That was sweet revenge for the previous week.  However, he then came up against eventual champion Marcelo Rios and lost.

10 October - All American clash in Round 1 in Singapore

Jan-Michael has a clash with his mate and Davis Cup colleague Justin Gimelstob in the first round of the ATP event in Singapore which starts Monday.  The winner of this will probably take on Michael Chang, who for some reason always seens to play his best tennis in the Far East......

8 October - Jan-Mike loses the edge at the QF stage

Jan-Mike unfortunately ran into Michael Chang at the Quarter Final stage in Shanghai today.  He lost in straight sets 6-3, 7-5.

7 October - JMG through to Quarters

Jan-Mike beat Anthony Dupois in the second round to progress through to the Last 8 in Shanghai.  He won 6-3, 6-4 and will now face Michael Chang.

4 October - Jan-Mike wins first match since US Open

Jan Michael Gambill won his first match since the US Open when he defeated Chinese wildcard Yu Wang in Shanghai for the loss of only one game. Fourth-seed Gambill won 6-0, 6-1.  He seems to have bounced back from having to retire with cramps in New York.  Let's hope that this is the return to form that JM so desperately needs to improve his end of year ranking.

4 September - Jan-Mike returns home for some rest

After a good victory against Stefan Koubek from Austria, Jan-Mike took on Fabrice Santoro in the second round of the US Open last night.  After taking the first two sets with what looked like relative ease, he started to develop cramp during the third set.  However, he did not give up and let Santoro come back to take the 3rd and 4th sets.  He had hoped that the cramp would pass but it did not and the pain got so severe during the 5th set that eventually Jan-Mike had to retire when he collapsed on the court and could not get up afterwards.  Score 4-4.  After this, it will be back to Colbert for a rest before the final leg of the year.

30 August - Jan-Mike not due to play until at least Tuesday

Due to work commitments, all updates will be appearing on the Message Board this week.

Unfortunately, it was not a happy ending for Jan-Mike in Long Island.   He and Scott Humphries were beaten in the final of the doubles event by experienced French pair, Delaitre and Santoro.

29 August - Gambill into Doubles final in Long Island

Things might not have been going too well in singles lately for Jan-Michael but the hard work is really starting to pay off on the doubles court because he and partner Scott Humphries have reached the final at the ATP tournament in Long Island.  The American pair have beaten several influential teams along the way including Damm & Vacek, as well as Bhupathi & Wayne Ferreira.  All this match practice will have done Jan-Mike no harm at all in his build up to the US Open which starts tomorrow.

26 August - Jan-Mike's draw in New York

Jan-Michael has a fair draw for the US Open which starts next week.   He is due to play Austrian Stefan Koubek in the first round.  When he wins that one, he is likely to face Sebastien Grosjean in Round 2.  This won't be easy but a win there should put him up against Pete Sampras in Round 3.  JM won the last time they played - at Scottsdale this year.  Hopefully this will be a good omen - JM went on to win his first career title in Scottsdale so another win here might be just as fruitful.

24 August - Gambill in Long Island

Unfortunately, Jan-Mike lost his first match in Long Island earlier this week to Richard Krajicek again.  Anyway, a few day's break will do him no harm with his "home" grand slam starting next week.

15 August - Cincinnati round-up

Jan-Michael managed to beat Sjeng Schalken in Round 1 this week, but came up against inform Ecuadorian, Nicolas Lapentti in Round 2 where he lost in straight sets.

JM is due to play Kenneth Carlsen in the first round of his home tournament in Washington this week.  Let's hope that the "home" crowd can get him a few victories.  More news when available.

8 August - Cincinnati (7th Super 9)

Jan-Mike has been drawn against Sjeng Schalken in the opening round of this week's Super 9 in Cincinnati.  A second round match against either his great mate Vince Spadea or Nico Lapentti beckons.  Then it might be Rafter!  Points galore to be had this week.

6 August - JM manages a Montreal "Double Bagel"

JMG's first match this week was rather quick 6-0, 6-0.  This is only the second or third "Double Bagel" this year.  Unfortunately, this massacre did not continue in the next round.  He had to play Wayne Ferreira and came off court second best - although it was very close and went to a final set tie break.

1 August - Montreal draw

Luck seems to be on JM's side this week.  His first round opponent is Jocelyn Robichaud (yes he is a "he") from Canada.  Let's hope that JM can get back to winning ways.

27 July - Jan-Mike overrun by Andre Agassi

In his first tournament since Wimbledon, Jan-Michael had a very stern test against fellow American, Andre Agassi.  JM lost in 2 sets.

24 July - LA entry confirmed

Jan-Michael joins a impressive list of challengers for the Mercedes Benz Cup in LA this week.  The draw is not yet available so let's keep our fingers crossed that JM can avoid the hazards of Sampras, Agassi, Rios and Henman in the opening couple of rounds!
